The Emmet Street/Ivy Road intersection near UVA is slated for a makeover—from gas stations and historically significant burger joints to a new gateway to the university. Of course, every point of arrival needs a point of departure. Tonight, Charlottesville City Council is slated to approve $400,000 for the UVA project—nearly half its $812,600 cost.
According to a memo from Neighborhood Development Services, "City staff has identified approximately $400,000 in costs that can be attributed to the road and drainage improvements that would be legitimate City costs." The money comes from funds allocated for projects including the West Main streetscape, renovations to the UVA Corner, and $250,000 planned for storm water repairs to the Schenk’s Branch interceptor, overseen by the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority.
