UVA basketball star Monica Wright named ACC Player of the Year [VIDEO]

Yesterday, UVA senior basketball star Monica Wright was named ACC Player of the Year—one day after she was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Not too surprising if one looks at Wright’s performance throughout the year.

According to the Associated Press, the 5′ 11" guard from Woodbridge led the league in scoring (a 23 points-per-game average) and steals (3.6 steals a game). Earlier this season, she became UVA women’s basketball’s all-time highest scorer, with 2,474 and counting, and she is currently third on the ACC women’s basketball all-time list. She trails Clemson’s Barbara Kennedy (3,113 points) and Duke’s Alana Beard (2,687 points). More after the video:

The Cavaliers are ranked third in the ACC standings, and tip off against No. 6 North Carolina State tonight at 8pm in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championship.

In her final regular season game against rival Virginia Tech, Wright scored 27 points. Her jersey number, 22, was retired that night in front of a crowd at John Paul Jones Arena.
