UVA President John Casteen made the announcement, calling Woo a "remarkably accomplished teacher, scholar and fundraiser." Woo is a native of Seoul and is fluent in English, Korean and Japanese. She currently serves as associate dean for social sciences in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, and as a professor of political science at the University of Michigan.
Since Ed Ayers, the former dean of Arts and Sciences, announced his departure in November 2006, UVA’s search for a permanent replacement proved elusive. On July 3, 2007, Karen Ryan was named as interim dean.
