UPDATE: Local restaurateur Michael Crafaik, 37, confirmed dead

J. Michael Crafaik III, founder and owner of longtime Corner eatery Michael’s Bistro and Tap House, died Saturday at UVA Medical Center.

"He had struggled extensively with bipolar disorder," his stepmother, Kay Neeley, told C-VILLE on Friday morning. "He was a wonderful person."

Asked about Crafaik’s restaurant, Neeley said, "The bistro is his legacy; it will continue."

Crafaik opened Michael’s Bistro in 1994. He also ran unsuccessfully for Charlottesville City Council in 1996 and 1998.

Arrangements are being handled by Hill and Wood.
