Charlottesville Police arrested a pair of 14-year-old males, one from Charlottesville and the other from Albemarle County, in connection with two group assaults that took place at McGuffey Park in May. According to a news release from Charlottesville Lt. Ronnie Roberts, the juveniles are each charged with two counts of assault by mob in connection with the incidents, which started with…tea.
"This incident stemmed over a cup of tea being thrown and the fight started as a ‘one on one’ and escalated into an assault by mob," says Roberts. He adds that there is no evidence to suggest a gang-related incident.
Charlottesville Sgt. T.V. McKean previously told C-VILLE that he was "not going to say that there is anything out of control at the park," where 10 assaults took place within a 500′ perimeter between January 1 and the May 13 incidents. Most reports place assaults outside of the park, however; additionally, the same radius around a few other city parks nabbed a greater number of assault reports.
