Is a turf vs. grass battle looming in the City of Charlottesville? Presenting a "Green City Vision" report to City Council last night, city Environmental Administrator Kristel Riddervold said that the Citizens Committee on Environmental Sustainability wanted it noted on the record that the Committee opposes the installation of artificial turf on any public properties, including school properties.
City schools haven’t yet decided to move forward with
the proposal to switch to turf.
Councilors had no objection to that conclusion, but Mayor Dave Norris suggested that Riddervold talk to the city School Board about that decision. Like the county schools, city schools received an anonymous donation to help pay for the installation of artificial turf on the high school football field. Unlike county schools, however, city schools haven’t decided whether to move forward with the proposal.

In other City Council news, the city committed to spending up to $10,000 to kick-start a community-wide “dialogue on race,” though they’ll wait until budget hearings to decide whether to spend $30,000 to $50,000 on it in the next fiscal year, which begins in July.
