There is a cacophony of music in Charlottesville: At any given moment during any given day, a DJ is setting a needle into the vinyl grooves of a scratched Marvin Gaye record or a band is packing instruments into a bar with a clatter. Too much noise and the magic is gone—in one earphone and out the other. For our annual music issue, C-VILLE unplugged our headphones and abandoned our typical tune haunts to discover the unheard music of our neck of the woods, from digital innovators to gospel choirs to the dedicated fans drawn into the business of local music—everything off the musical map, on the record. All you have to do is plug in and press “play.
