The long-awaited development on the corner of Hydraulic Road and Route 29 North is finally close to being a reality. The Shops at Stonefield will break ground in the spring of this year and the development, formerly Albemarle Place, will include a 12,500 square-foot Trader Joe’s.
The grocery store first applied for an ABC license in June 2009 only to withdraw it in July 2010. The 2009 license application listed the grocer’s address at 1080 Seminole Trail. According to ABC, there are no current applications for Trader Joe’s in the area.
According to a press release, the first phase of the 1.2 million square-foot development will include a 135-room hotel, 270,000 square feet of retail, residential space, a central plaza, “pocket parks,” a 65,000 square-foot, 14-screen, IMAX-able movie theater.
Robbie Robertson, communications director for Shops’ developer Edens & Avant, tells C-VILLE that after the town center (phase 1) is built, the hotel and residential areas will follow.
The Shops is expected to generate up to 772 new jobs and an additional 1,700 in construction. Faulconer Construction Company, the same constructon firm that has worked on the county portion of the Meadowcreek Parkway, has been awarded the contract.
A date for the groundbreaking has not been set yet.
