Thumbing through Charlottesville’s film history

This week’s cover story is about Virginia’s film industry, which means that after today, this blog will have more of a cursory interest in the, how do you say, septième art. So I wanted to celebrate with a selection of some films that were made in or near Charlottesville, which you can see in these trailers.

Giant (1956), when Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean descended upon Keswick.

The Four Seasons (1981), written and directed by Alan Alda. The scenes that take place in the fall were shot in the county.

True Colors (1991). One scene was filmed inside the old Trax nightclub.

Toy Soldiers (1991), filmed at the Miller School.

Major Payne (1995), The Miller School again.

Swedish Auto (2006), shot at Mel’s on Main St. and on some tracks around town.

Familiar Strangers (2008), shot mostly in Staunton.

Evan Almighty (2007), shot in Crozet. (Recognize those mountains?)

La bestia nel cuore (Don’t Tell) (2005), an Italian film shot on the Lawn—is that Jefferson’s work? Or Palladio?

What’s your favorite local movie, besides Major Payne?
