Three UVA baseball players have been selected so far in this year’s Major League Baseball Draft, reports the Daily Progress. David Adams, who played second base for UVA, was picked up by the New York Yankees in the third round of the draft. In the fifth round, the Baltimore Orioles picked up shortstop Greg Miclat and the Atlanta Braves selected pitcher Jacob Thompson. The players, all juniors, will forgo their final year of eligibility at UVA if they sign contracts with their respective teams. The Progress speculates that Adams and Thompson are likely to sign.
In addition to the three UVA players drafted, Peter Hissey, an outfielder from Unionville High in Pennsylvania and incoming player in UVA’s recruiting class, went to the Boston Red Sox in the fourth round. If you can get the money, who needs college anyway?
The draft continues today, with a few more Cavs hoping to hear their names called. St. Anne’s-Belfield’s Kyle Long, brother of Chris and son of Howie, has not been drafted yet, either. The Progress reports that Major League teams were likely concerned that they couldn’t pay Long enough to break his commitment to play ball at Florida State.
