Feelings of deja vu? How about now? Or now? Last night, a wet microburst left thousands without power from early evening through this morning. (If you’ve just relocated to Charlottesville, here’s a primer on microbursts; some of us have weathered a few already.) Multiple businesses at Barracks Road, on the Downtown Mall and on the Corner, are still without power currently. Photos and more below.
Last night, the Charlottesville Fire Department closed or limited access to roads from Rugby Avenue to Park Street as reports of fallen trees and electrical wires came in. Chief Charles Werner sent frequent e-mails to warn residents of the damage: a gas station canopy that broke over tanks at Cherry Avenue (above); a car stranded in high water at Ivy and Old Ivy roads; a car smashed by trees on Rosser Lane (below).
Werner wrote after midnight that more than 6,000 homes in Charlottesville and another 3,000 in Albemarle County were without power. This morning, Dominion Power’s outage map shows thousands still without power between the city and county, and an interactive map numbers more than 2,000 in the city.
