ecoMOD1: the OUTin house, 2005
Partner: Piedmont Housing Authority

•    Two-unit condo built from eight small modules in Charlottesville’s Fifeville neighborhood
•    Designed to merge outdoor and indoor spaces
•    Includes first potable rainwater collection system in the city

ecoMOD2: the preHAB house, 2006
Partner: Habitat for Humanity

•    Built in post-Katrina southern Mississippi
•    Shows that contemporary design and sustainable prefabrication are compatible with Habitat For Humanity model
•    Includes a passive cooling system that doubles as hurricane protection

 

ecoMOD3: the SEAM house, 2007
Partner: Piedmont Housing Authority

•    Two-unit renovation of mid-19th century historic property (probably built as slave quarters) in Fifeville
•    Includes energy-efficient foam insulation and reconditioned historic wood flooring from original structure

ecoMOD4: currently underway
Partner: Habitat for Humanity

•    Single-family home planned for small site in historic Ridge Street neighborhood
•    Projected cost: $120,000 ($60,000 from Habitat, $60,000 raised by UVA)
•    Plans to include a shared orchard
•    Overall project is currently a finalist in World Habitat Awards

Solar Decathlon: Trojan Goat, 2002

•    Entered in U.S. Department of Energy solar house-building competition
•    Placed first in Architectural Design, second overall
•    Exterior rain screen made of reclaimed shipping-pallet wood
•    Includes interactive “smartwall” that reflects internal temperature of the house by changing color
•    Cost: $350,000
