Teresa Sullivan is named the eighth president of UVA

The UVA Board of Visitors announced this afternoon that Teresa Sullivan, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Michigan, is the eighth president of the University. Sullivan’s term will last five years, and her salary will not exceed $680,000.

UVA Rector John Wynne told the large crowd at the Dome Room of the Rotunda that today marked “a historic moment for the University."

“Terry is an extraordinary talent and brings to the University an enormous depth and breadth of experience in literally every aspect of public higher education,” said Wynne.

Sullivan, 60, who is a leading labor force demographer, currently also serves as the chief budget officer at the University of Michigan, as well as the board of the college’s health system.

During her remarks, Sullivan, a self-professed fan of Thomas Jefferson, said that she brings dedication and passion to her new role.

“Let’s work hard,” she said.

Sullivan is John Casteen’s successor. Casteen is set to retire after 20 years at the helm of the University on August 1.

Sullivan said she will try to come to Charlottesville "at least one weekend a month" until she steps into her new role later in the year.
