Student arrested following bomb threat at Ivy Creek School

At 11:18 this morning, a bomb threat to Ivy Creek School prompted four area schools to lock their doors while Albemarle County police responded to the report. The doors of Albemarle High, Greer Elementary, Ivy Creek, and Jack Jouett Middle remained locked for roughly 30 minutes, during which time police took an unidentified minor into custody in front Ivy Creek. No bombs were located at the site of the school.

The minor, a student, was charged with assault, possession of a weapon on school property, and threatening to bomb a building. An Ivy Creek employee who declined to give her name said, "Part of it was miscommunication, and we really can’t give out any information beyond what was released by Albemarle County Schools."

According to a press release from Albemarle County Public Schools, the student is not a resident of Albemarle. Ivy Creek, a special education center for emotionally disturbed students in grades K-12, serves several surrounding counties and is located near both Albemarle High and Jouett Middle. The school enrolls a maximum of 72 students.

Sergeant Darrell Byers says law enforcement has not determined motivation or premeditation with regards to the incident, and is not currently interviewing faculty or other students.
