Ryan replacement will be Cal’s coach

A couple of weeks after UVA women’s basketball head coach Debbie Ryan announced her retirement, the Cavaliers have a replacement.

Multiple news outlets are reporting that UVA has tapped Joanne Boyle, head coach at the University of California-Berkeley, to fill the shoes of Ryan, the hall of fame veteran who led the Cavaliers for 34 years. Cal hired Boyle in 2005 after she spent three seasons as head coach at the University of Richmond.

Boyle’s tenure at Cal started off hot, with her first four teams making the NCAA tournament, but recent years have been less kind. In 2010, the Golden Bears at least picked up the WNIT title after falling short of the NCAA tournament.

Earlier in the week, Boyle denied online reports that she was taking the UVA job.

Boyle graduated from Duke in 1985 and ended her playing career ranked second in both scoring and assists.
