Robert Hurt beats out Boyd, Verga in Fifth District GOP fundraising

Money—it’s a gas. Yesterday, at least five of the seven GOP candidates vying for the Fifth District seat of freshman Democratic Congressman Tom Perriello reported what’s in their tanks.

The Federal Election Commission’s deadline for disclosing first-quarter campaign fundraising totals was yesterday at 5pm. In the last week, Perriello’s campaign announced that it raised $600,000 during the first quarter, a total that left him with roughly $1.4 million to put towards reelection.

The five GOP candidates with available filings—Senator Robert Hurt, Albemarle County Supervisor Ken Boyd, Laurence Verga, Jim McKelvey and Michael McPadden—combined for more than $195,000 funds raised between January 1 and March 31. More than 50 percent of the total belongs to Hurt, who pulled in $101,109 during the first quarter. Hurt’s nearest challenger is Laurence Verga, who earned $31,523 during the same time.

Boyd, a two-term Albemarle County Supervisor, raised $19,305, which places him nearly $6,000 ahead of McKelvey. No word yet from challengers Feda Kidd Morton or Ron Ferrin.
