Former Virginia governor Mark Warner has received endorsements by 600 local elected officials and nearly half of them are Republicans and Independents.
Warner’s Senate campaign announced yesterday that “Virginians for Warner” include former Republican Governor Linwood Holton (father-in-law of current Governor Tim Kaine), Del. Bob Bloxom (R-Accomack), Del. Hank Lampe (R-Arlington), former Sen. Ed Robb (R-Albemarle), Del. Jim Dillard (R-Fairfax), former Del. Panny Rhodes (R-Henrico), Del. Preston Bryant (R-Lynchburg), Del. Jack Rollison (R-Prince William), Del. Katherine Waddell (I-Richmond), Del. Clint Miller (R-Shenandoah), Del. Pete Giesen (R-Staunton) and Sen. Russ Potts (R-Winchester).
Del. Vincent F. Callahan Jr. and Sen. John H. Chichester cited Warner’s bipartisan efforts and approach as key to their endorcements.
Today’s announcement follows the recent endorsements of “Sportsmen for Warner,” a group of 50 leaders in the hunting, fishing and conservation communities and "Conservationists for Warner," a leadership team that will work to highlight Warner’s record in environmental and resource protection, as wekk as endorsements from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Police Benevolent Association.
In Charlottesville, all members of the City Council endorsed the former governor and in the county, all members of the Board of Supervisors also endorsed Warner.
Tonight at 7pm, Mark Warner and rival Senate candidate Jim Gilmore will face off in a televised debate on NBC29.
The two debated for the first time in July at the Homestead Resort.
Mark Warner was also endorsed by key sheriffs from across western Virginia. He is running against former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore.
