Passes pay off for UVA women’s basketball player [February 22]

During Thursday night’s 83-71 win against Clemson, UVA women’s basketball player Sharneé Zoll broke the ACC record for all-time assists. The senior surpassed former UVA star Dawn Staley’s record of 729 assists in the second half with a pass to Monica Wright and tallied up another assist after that to push her record to 731. ““I’m so relieved that it came,” said Zoll. “I can stop thinking about it. My teammates don’t have to concentrate on it, or worry about missing lay-ups at halftime or keeping track of my assists throughout the game.”

“I have gotten the chance to coach two of the best players in the game, especially in the ACC and even more especially at Virginia,” said head coach Debbie Ryan. “To have two of those players, Dawn Staley and Sharneé Zoll, obviously I have been blessed and honored to be their coach, and to have the relationship that I have with both of them has been a dream for me.”

In related news, the UVA men’s basketball team was scheduled to play at Georgia Tech on Thursday night, but the game was postponed due to a leak in the roof of Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The two teams will have to reschedule the match.

Update: The UVA men’s basketball game against Georgia Tech has been rescheduled for March 3, at 7:00 p.m. in Georgia Tech’s Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The leak has been fixed, we assume.
