Parking Lot Movie starts local run tomorrow

Many are probably talking about the highly entertaining, if slightly confusing, event that took place last night at the Jefferson Theater: The Amateur Hour Variety Hour, which I previewed in this week’s Feedback column. It was a wild ride, with everything from comedy from the Tip-Top Twins (a comedy duo that features Denise Stewart and Mendy St. Ours), sword swallowing (courtesy of Opal), and at the end of The Invisible Hand’s set a noisy cameo by Gypsy jazzist Rick Olivarez (who is rumored to love Cheap Trick).

Sure, there were technical difficulties—in particular, it was impossible to hear what was happening in host Phil Grannitte’s (Tyler Magill) hospital soap opera, "Love’s Fertile Crevasse," starring Grannitte, Devon Sproule and an amateur from the crowd. But the Hour succeeded in bringing together a wide variety of people—including a sizeable audience—in the name of…was it merrymaking?

Although it premiered at the Paramount, played at the Virginia Film Festival and screened on PBS, you might not have had the opportunity to check out The Parking Lot Movie, Charlottesville’s most celebrated film export of 2010. If you’ve been waiting for the opportunity to see how it holds up in the standard moviegoing experience, a limited run at Vinegar Hill Theatre goes tomorrow through Tuesday. Visit the website for showtimes.

Snazzy new art!
