November 08: Health and hormones

Ladies, how many times have you purchased condoms? Research argues that you probably never have.

Plannet Parenthood Vice President David Nova says that studies conducted through his organization show that most women are embarrassed to buy condoms, and that it’s generally more culturally accepted for men to be the condom-carriers. But research also shows that the majority of the time, women are more likely to initiate condom use in a relationship.

“Because the decision to use the condom is often at the women’s incentive, making her the gatekeeper of safe sex in a relationship is an important thing to do,” Nova said.

Condoms to jazz up the inside of your purse: Planned Parenthood’s Proper Attire.

So this fall Planned Parenthood came up with a solution to cure women’s fear of condoms and yes, girls, it still involves latex. These condoms are FDA-approved and come in trendy “flame,” “olive,” and “violet” packaging.  Even the name has a feminine ring to it: Proper Attire.

Just to be clear: These are not female condoms. But they are strongly marketed toward women, and are sold at Planned Parenthood offices. Through stylish packaging, Nova says Planned Parenthood’s hope is to change the “cultural stigmas about women carrying condoms.”
