City Mayor Dave Norris ceremonially cut the ribbon on the Downtown rebricking on November 6 with Morgan Perkins, owner of the Sage Moon Gallery, and City Councilor Holly Edwards. Though the event was billed as the “Mall Restoration Groundbreaking,” it was really just a demonstration of what the barriers will look like on the Mall, as well as a way to give nervous business owners a, er, concrete image of the slab that lies just below the surface. Workers will really start getting down and dirty with the brick replacement on January 2. Many pundits predict the city has a snowball’s chance in hell of finishing by May, citing the Third Street debacle, but city officials argue that the concrete slab makes all the difference—for the most part, all they’ll have to do is tear up the old bricks and lay down new ones. |
