No. 4: Wendell Wood

WENDELL WOOD
United Land Corporation

Assessed value: $122 million*
Acres: 1,966

Notable holdings: Undeveloped portions of Hollymead Town Center; office buildings adjacent to NGIC; Forest Springs Mobile Home Park.

In the news recently for the sale of a 48-acre tract of land to the U.S. Army for the expansion of the National Ground Intelligence Center (NGIC), Wendell Wood has been a power player in the county’s growth area debates. The $7-million sale of the land prompted the planned construction of a 219,000-square-foot facility that will house hundreds of current and relocated NGIC employees. Always one to make the best of an opportunity, Wood is building several thousand square feet of office space adjacent to NGIC that, in part, he is leasing to the feds.

Wood loves his work and loves NGIC. “That and the University of Virginia are the greatest things to ever happen to this community,” Wood told C-VILLE in March 2007.
