No. 1: University of Virginia Foundation

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA FOUNDATION

Assessed value: $342 million
Acres: 4,766

Notable holdings: Boar’s Head Inn and Birdwood Golf Course; North Fork Research Park; Fontaine Research Park; Morven Farm; 18 residential properties; 14 apartment buildings; 18 office buildings; two other hotels; one former hospital; and five restaurants.

The UVA Foundation, which manages the taxable real estate holdings of the University, was founded in 1993. Although the Foundation owns the land at 2600 Barracks Road, it leases it to The Colonnades, a retirement community.

Recently, the Foundation bought the 60-room Econo Lodge at 400 Emmet St. for $6 million and used the “Meadow Creek II Corporation” pseudonym.

“It was purchased because it is adjacent to UVA property,” Foundation CEO Tim Rose told C-VILLE when we first reported that news. “So it is a long-term, land-banking acquisition, not one for immediate need.”
