Feedback is going to ask that you forgive a lack of gorgeous prose in the name of excitement and breaking, music-related news. Here he was, eager to announce an August gig at Fry’s Spring Beach Club by The Fiery Furnaces (who played Satellite Ballroom last year) and ATO Records’ own White Rabbits when something else caught his eye.
Feedback noticed a few odd gigs on the Starr Hill Presents ticketing website, scheduled for a venue called "The Southern." The Starr Hill Presents Facebook page clarifies that The Southern is "formerly Gravity Lounge."
So it looks as if the new room run by Andy Gems and Lauren McRaven (the music portion, anyways) has a name. Congratulations, you proud parents, you!
While Feedback has no word yet about the official opening date for the venue, it appears that The Southern will be up and running by mid-September, when it hosts a trio of Starr Hill Presents shows. James McMurtry (who previously played Gravity Lounge) is scheduled for a September 18 gig that kicks off a weekend trio of excellent shows. Ingrid Michaelson is next on The Southern’s calendar, slated for September 19. Wrapping things up on September 20 is Jolie Holland, a personal favorite of Feedback who has worked with guitarists like M. Ward and Marc Ribot and won fans including Tom Waits. Tickets for the Michaelson and Holland gigs are available here.
More news as I can find it, rock stars. In the meantime, here’s your first proper chance to respond to an old club with a new name and some new musical blood. What do you think?
I’ll leave you with a bit of Jolie Holland, to stoke your appetite:
