In a statement released yesterday to members of the media, Marta Murphy—mother of UVA lacrosse player George Huguely, charged in the death of fourth-year student Yeardley Love—expressed her devastation over the death of Love and her support of her son.
"On behalf of our family, I want to express how deeply saddened we are by Yeardley’s loss," says Murphy in the statement. "Also as a mother, I hope that people can understand that both George’s father and I love our son." She calls Love "part of our lives," and describes her as "a sweet wonderful young woman with a limitless future." A call to Murphy was not immediately returned.
Yesterday, UVA President John Casteen met with Governor Bob McDonnell to discuss information sharing between universities and law enforcement agencies as a way of ensuring student security. An article in the Chronicle of Higher Education details some of the complications that might accompany such a system of information sharing.
Today, VirginiaSports.com announced that UVA men’s lacrosse player Ken Clausen, a fourth-year student, was one of five finalists for the annual Tewaaraton award for outstanding college player. In April, it was announced that four members of the Cavaliers were in the running for the award.
