A fugitive suspect who had been wanted since October 13 was shot by police after a three-hour manhunt on Friday, October 20. Elvis Shifflett was wanted for ambushing and attempting to shoot his ex-girlfriend earlier this month and had been on the run for a week.
The manhunt reportedly began when Shifflett’s red Dodge Shadow was spotted near Albemarle Police headquarters on Oak Hill Drive in the county. When officers tried to pull him over, he sped away. Shifflett dumped the car on Route 20 near Lyman Hill Drive, just south of the entrance to PVCC.
County and City police, plus Virginia State Police and U.S. Marshals got involved in the search. Police halted traffic on Route 20, put a nearby school on lockdown and used dogs to search a creek for Shifflett. He was found by two Charlottesville police officers around 6pm on Brookhill Avenue, part of the Willow Lake subdivision near Route 20.
A shooting ensued and Shifflett was injured. Charlottesville police aren’t saying how many times Shifflett was shot or if he was armed, but Albemarle Police Lieutenant John Teixeira said at a press conference following that the officers “felt it was a dangerous situation and they had to take action.”
Shifflett was taken to UVA hospital and was in critical condition Friday night. Despite multiple gun shot wounds, he is expected to survive.
The State Police will investigate the use of force in the shooting. WCAV TV reported the two officers who found Shifflett have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation. Teixeira says when multiple police jurisdictions are involved, a State investigation is “the prudent thing to do.”
