Robert Wayne Wyant, a 32-year-old firefighter with the East Rivanna Volunteer Fire Company, was babysitting for the daughter of a friend last November 14. Whatever happened during that babysitting session, 8-month-old Alexis McFadyen ended up at UVA Hospital.
She died two days later as a result of injuries from blunt force trauma to the head. Her injuries were consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome.
![]() 32-year-old Robert Wayne Wyant has been charged with murder, among other crimes, in the death of an 8-month-old girl. |
Albemarle police arrested Wyant February 9 after a two-month investigation. He has been charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse.
Initially, the name of the baby was not released. But Albemarle Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Cynthia Murray held a press conference disclosing the name of the infant and Wyant’s connection to the family after The Daily Progress speculated correctly that the mysterious 8-month-old and McFadyen, described in medical examiner’s reports, were one in the same.
Murray says Wyant has been charged for both murder and manslaughter because her office is building a “circumstantial case” against him. So, depending on how events surrounding the killing get interpreted, Wyant could be prosecuted for either charge.
A bond hearing is set for February 20.—with additional reporting by Kyle Daly
