Lawrence Kochard was named the new Chief Executive Officer of the University of Virginia’s Investment Management Company (UVIMCO).
Kocharn, who currently serves as the chief investment officer at Georgetown, will join UVIMCO in January. He succeeds former CEO Christopher Brightman who resigned in March.
Kochard has many ties to UVA. He received a Master’s (1996) and Ph.D. (1999) in economics from the University. He holds a bachelor’s in economics from the College of William and Mary and an MBA from the University of Rochester. He has taught at UVA’s McIntire School of Commerce from 1997 to 2000.
His oldest son, Christopher, is currently a junior at UVA’s School of Engineering and Applied Science.
From 2001 to 2004, Kochard was managing director for equity and hedge fund investments for the Virginia Retirement System and has worked on Wall Street.
As CEO of UVIMCO, he will manage, with the help of this staff, an endowment of $4.6 billion, and as state support continues to diminish, “endowment income and private gifts [will] provide the extra margin that takes the University of Virginia from adequacy to excellence,” said UVA President Teresa Sullivan in a news release.
“They also provide flexibility to meet pressing needs and support priorities as they arise during leaner times. The endowment contributes to the overall financial strength of the University. We are entrusting Mr. Kochard with one of our most important assets.”
