Lars gives up appeal, goes pro

Unless you live and breathe European basketball, you probably won’t be seeing much more of Laurynas “Lars” Mikalauskas. The former UVA basketball player announced on August 28 that he won’t appeal his academic eligibility status. Instead, Lars will try to go pro abroad and has signed with Michael Lelchitski, an agent for Sports International Group.

Lars Mikalauskas will now flex for a European audience, assuming he’s picked up by a pro team.

“I took great pride in being a student athlete at the University of Virginia,” Mikalauskas said in a press release. “I could not see myself transferring to another school, or playing for another college basketball team. Therefore, I have decided to forgo my last year of NCAA eligibility and pursue my dream of playing basketball at the professional level.”

Mikalauskas rarely posted impressive numbers—last year, he averaged 7 points and 17 minutes per game—but he was a fan favorite for his exuberance on the court and was expected to start this season.
