David Works, a descendant of Thomas Jefferson who has tried to reconcile racial divisions, was wounded in the Colorado shootings over the weekend, reports the Daily Progress. Two of Works daughters, Rachael, 16, and Sephanie, 18, were killed when Matthew Murray opened fire at a missionary training center. The story says that Works has been instrumental in bringing together descendants of Jefferson and one of his slaves, Sally Hemings. In 1998, DNA testing showed that Hemings likely descended from a male member of Jefferson’s family.
