Don’t be surprised if you see Jaws‘ Matt Hooper strolling around the UVA grounds tomorrow. Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss, along with film director and producer Ron Maxwell, will speak at the annual Journey Through Hallowed Ground (JTHG) conference at the Darden School of Business on Tuesday. JTHG was originally created as part of the House of Representatives’ 2007 "Celebrating America’s Heritage Act" and follows Route 15 from Monticello to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, tracking the path’s historical importance.
This year’s conference focuses on sparking historical interest in America’s youth, and will present a service learning project called Of the Student, By the Student, For the Student, which teams middle and high school students with historical experts to produce films. For JTHG’s version of the program, Monticello professionals matched up with Sutherland Middle School sixth graders to create films highlighting Thomas Jefferson’s importance. Any chance that Dreyfuss or Maxwell could give a few students their big break?
