The Charlottesville Pavilion‘s management is slated to announce this afternoon something most of Charlottesville already knows: With the go-ahead from City Council, the venue’s name will change from the Charlottesville Pavilion to the nTelos Wireless Pavilion. "This was something that the pavilion management was given the right to do eight years ago," Mayor Dave Norris said at last night’s City Council meeting, according to the Daily Progress. "So for us to now deny them that right would be a breach of contract, and that’s dangerous territory for us."
That sublease stipulates that the pavilion’s operators can change its name, provided that the name doesn’t contain lewd or pornographic terms or the name of a tobacco company. The details of the agreement have not yet been released. The pavilion is also expected to announce today the performer at its annual Free Clinic Benefit. Last year’s headliner was Sheryl Crow.
nTelos, a telecommunications company based in Waynesboro, also has a naming agreement with the nTelos Wireless Pavilion in Portsmouth, Virginia.
And in unrelated news it’s been announced that Snoop Dogg is coming to the Jefferson Theater on Monday, April 25. Yes, that Snoop Dogg, the Dr. Dre protegé from Long Beach, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus, whose cartoon character name, love of being stoned and legitimately amazing singles have placed him somewhere between artist and punchline for nearly two decades. Tickets are on sale Friday.
