Do you remember the song that goes “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot” [“Biscuit Run, Habitat team up,” January 23]? Well, in the case of Biscuit Run it is paved paradise and put up a small town! I will be living down the street from this mess and like most of the neighbors I’m not in favor of this project. We are writing and asking the Board of Supervisors not to rezone the 1,000 acres that was zoned rural residential to high density. For those of your readers who are not familiar with this project, Biscuit Run sits between Old Lynchburg Road and Route 20 and is 1,000 acres of woods and a pond. It was zoned rural residential in the 1960s for 900 homes, which sounds like a lot, but now developers want 3,100 homes, office space, apartments, condos, a shopping center and an elementary school! It is a huge difference from the original plan.
Simply put, it is just too large of a project and we don’t need the traffic in town or on Route 29 and we don’t need the drain on the resources. Why do we need more homes, when in Crozet there is a glut of houses that sit empty? The national news also reported just days ago that new home sales are down 17.5 percent.
In Napa, California, a once beautiful area like this has been ruined due to overbuilding. Land got so scarce that they build homes 6’ apart and they now build literally in the backyard of large lots. Is this what we want? Do we love bumper-to-bumper traffic and smog? Would we enjoy being put on water restrictions? If your answer is yes, then allow the developers to become wealthy and the Board of Supervisors to make a thoughtless decision in regards to the rest of us in the community. If it is no, write the board and tell them no to rezoning and sign the petition the Sierra Club is circulating asking the board to conduct an environmental impact report prior to their decision.
When is enough, enough? When homes are so close you can shake your neighbor’s hand? Let’s not wait. Write to the Board of Supervisors: bos@albemarle.org. Or help collect signatures or sign the petition, by contacting the Sierra Club at 973-0373 or jcruicks@peoplepc.com. Thank you.
