On Friday, former Bush administration lawyer and law professor John Yoo will present a forum at the Miller Center of Public Affairs titled "Crisis and Command: Executive Power from George Washington to George W. Bush." The event takes its title from Yoo’s new book, which he will sign after the 11am forum before heading to a 3:30pm lecture at UVA’s Minor Hall. Recently, a Department of Justice investigation cleared Yoo of misconduct charges for his work on legal memos that authorized the use of waterboarding of suspected terrorists by the Central Intelligence Agency.
C-VILLE mentioned previously that several organizations planned to protest Yoo’s appearance in town. The website Hoos Against Yoo now lists speakers planned for the protest, including Shahid Buttar, executive director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, members of Code Pink and Veterans for Peace, and Cindy Sheehan, who spoke with C-VILLE in 2007.
Needless to say, the Miller Center may be crowded tomorrow. Follow C-VILLE here for details on Yoo’s morning forum and accompanying protests.
