Halsey Minor tops California tax delinquent list again

When it rains, it pours. Halsey Minor, the owner of the half-built Landmark Hotel on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, still owes the state of California more than $14 million in personal income taxes. Minor’s total is $1 million more than what he owed last April. (The exact amount is $14,247,341.09.)

According to the State of California Franchise Tax Board, as of April 14, Minor and his wife, Shannon, top a tax delinquent list that includes former "Baywatch" babe Pamela Anderson. (She owes $607,860.88). The state filed a tax lien against Minor on July 21, 2009.

Minor is no stranger to controversy. Locally, he owes the City of Charlottesville $84,351.68 in real estate taxes that have remained unpaid since June 2009.

The city’s Treasurer’s office explains that "if the taxes still remain unpaid, then collective action is initiated including salary liens, bank liens, rent liens, state refund set-offs and DMV [Department of Motor Vehicles] registration withholding. For real estate this eventually culminates in a judicial sale"—essentially, a foreclosure. The Landmark Hotel, however, will not see a foreclosure soon: Minor filed for bankruptcy protection to consolidate various legal actions filed against him.
