Gov. Tim Kaine announced today budget cuts to meet the $1.35 billion shortfall.
Close to 600 state employees will lose their jobs, as Kaine’s plan calls for the elimination of 929 positions, including 593 layoffs.
Among the saving measures, a one-day furlough of all state employees on the Friday before Memorial Day in 2010 and reductions of 13 or 15 percent for institutions of higher education.
"The Commonwealth is continuing to manage the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression both responsibly and transparently," said Kaine in a press release."There’s no question we remain in the midst of the toughest economy in a generation. But we also remain confident that Virginia will weather the storm and emerge stronger than ever before."
