According to Charlottesville Tomorrow, North Garden resident Madison Cummings has decided to throw his hat in the county Board of Supervisors race for the Samuel Miller District seat. Cummings, a Democrat, joins John Lowry, who has filed papers to run as an independent for the seat.
The Samuel Miller seat is currently held by Sally Thomas, an independent with strong support from local Democrats. Thomas hasn’t announced whether she will run for re-election, saying she will make a decision after the budget process ends mid-April, but particularly with Cummings’ announcement, most expect she’ll retire.
Cummings is the county Democratic Party’s chairman for the Samuel Miller District, and he served two terms on the county School Board. He told Charlottesville Tomorrow that education, social services issues and safety issues are very important to him.
Current Supervisor Dennis Rooker, an independent, has announced his intention to run for re-election for the Jack Jouett district, where no challenger has yet declared. Board Chairman David Slutzky, a Democrat, hasn’t announced if he will run for re-election, but if he does, he will face opposition from Republican Rodney Thomas for the Rio District.
