In recent weeks I’ve had occassion to visit the Plan 9 in Albemarle Square, mostly after getting turned away from Taste of China, and have been disappointed to see that business looks a little slow. The fast-emptying shelves enough to make you wonder whether record stores will someday be a laughable oddity, a burp in time and judgment, like the Ed Wood’s film that gives the dwindling franchise its name. I wrote about what Plan 9 is up to in this week’s Feedback column, and also note that, despite industry trends that suggest the opposite should be the case, Sidetracks Music on Water Street looks to be in good health.
Now onto the other news.
Deerhoof, the very weird Bay-area band that became very popular very slowly, is coming to the Jefferson Theater on August 10, according to Pollstar. (The dates are not yet on the Jefferson’s website.) Most exciting is that the tour likely means that the spazoids are preparing a new album, which would be their first since 2008. Sometimes a blogger consults a website widely considered to be an authority on a single issue and takes information from it that turns out to be wrong. Such was the case this morning when I consulted Pollstar, a website that exists to provide information on concerts, and saw a show announced at the Jefferson Theater featuring Deerhoof. Wrong band!
The band playing the Jefferson Theater on August 10 is Deerhunter, not to be confused with Deerhoof or the film the Deer Hunter. They’re bringing along Kurt Vile, who calls himself Philly’s Constant Hitmaker, and is responsible for the greatest easy listening hit that never was:
