Privet, bricksters. Lately, much of Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall is looking like a scene from Wag the Dog. And with the recent failure of the block "parties," Brick Watch started thinking today, why not re-imagine these block "parties"? Instead of "world class cities," maybe, "Other cities that have been torn to shreds and dealt with ballyhooed governmental decision making and are now doing OK/trying to rebound despite a cold economic climate" theme?
We wonder: Can you tell whether this rubble is from Charlottesville or the Middle East?
Do our discarded bricks look any different than this rubble found in Eastern Europe?
The good news is that the end is in sight. (If you find yourself overwhelmed, repeat April 25, April 25, April 25 slowly.) Every single block of the Mall is now in a demolition phase. There is demo being done on the south walkways on the 500 block (where the Virginia Discovery Museum is located), and some rebricking being done on the 100 east block (Wachovia building, Blue Light Grill). Using our top-notch observational skills, Brick Watch has determined that crews are making progress and are on time.
Still, we wonder: With all the progress being made, do these sort of brick piles detract from the shiny, new pavers? Couldn’t the crews be just a little more tidy?
