As the 100 east block draws to a close,
we look at things right under our nose,
at Starr Hill Park they’ll use our old brick,
and in honor of Dublin, we wrote a limerick.
We hope that our blog doesn’t make you want to doze.
Top ‘o’ the mornin’ to ya, brickies. It’s Dublin week on the Downtown Mall in honor of the rebricking of the 100 east block, and you know what that means…lots ‘o’ Irish cliches! Four leaf clovers, little old men in fedoras, Irish Cream, and even the Chieftains at the Paramount! Personally, Brick Watch couldn’t be happier, Ireland is the motherland!
We’ll put our copy of Ulysses and our Guinness down for now, though, to discuss our beloved bricks. On Friday, BW told you that some individual bricks would be for sale as "souvenirs." What we didn’t mention is that bricks are also for sale by the lot from the city, and that the city also plans on reusing the bricks around the city parks.
One such project will involve cooperation between the city and the Charlottesville Junior League. "We’re going to be refurbishing Starr Hill Park," says Junior League Member Elizabeth Puritz. "We’re using ground up old bricks from the Mall to make new walkways. It’s going to look great."
Speaking of looking great, anyone seen the Mall lately? Only the 100 west block remains to be demolished, but its north side is completely rebricked, as is majority of the 300 east block. Work continues on the 200 west block and on the south side of the 400 east block this week. We’ll cheers to that.
