Day 22: Dust, parties and mazes…oh my!

Apparently, there has been a dust problem on the Downtown Mall lately. Who knew?

OK, enough gloating, it’s time to talk about…parties. Yes, brick-related parties (sounds impossibly fun, we know). The Downtown Business Association has announced that they will be holding block parties as each block of the Mall’s rebricking is completed.

These parties will begin with the reopening of the 400 East block in mid-February. At these block parties, we will get to fete our small-town charm by having "city" themes for each party.

For example, the 400 block is planning a Chicago-style party for their opening, reports WCAV TV. Chicago has presumably been selected for its recent Obama-centered hype, and also its fittingly frigid weather. Brick Watch hopes there’s lots of deep dish pizza and hot dogs with pickles to keep us warm. Oh, and Oprah should come and give us all jazzy whatchamacallits and thingamajigs, and tell us what to think.

Brick Watch thinks maybe it would simply be easier (and more sensical) to simply reopen the Mall and let the people of Charlottesville go back to enjoying their public space.

In other news, the Mall is amazing. Or, is that just "a maze"? The video below illustrates the latter. Brick Watch nearly walked into a demo site early this morning, unaware of where to go! It was better by the time this video was shot; crews have put up "PEDESTRIAN ACCESS" signs with arrows on the barriers. Still, beware the labyrinth.
