Daily Progress lays off six workers

The Daily Progress announced layoffs today, including four in the news room and two in advertising.

"Our newspapers continue to face unprecedented economic challenges during this prolonged recession," said Lawrence McConnell, regional publisher, in a press release. McConnell also oversees the Waynesboro News Virginian, which was reduced by one staff member. "Our decision to part with these valued employees was difficult, and we very much appreciate their contributions to our newspapers."

With the cuts, the Progress is down to 87 employees.

The year hasn’t been good to Charlottesville’s daily paper. In January, it announced that it was trying to sell its building on Route 29 North. In February, the Progress announced that its parent company, Media General, was mandating that all employees take 10 days off without pay.

This latest news comes just a week after Media General announced a restructuring of its business starting July 1.
