These two teams first played in 1895, a contest in Charlottesville that ended with a 38-0 Virginia win. Not until 1905 did Virginia Tech pick up its first victory, an 11-0 game in Charlottesville— and after that, the teams decided to take 18 years off, not playing again until 1923. Overall, Virginia Tech leads the series, 46-37-5. Only in 1996 did it officially become known as the Commonwealth Cup, and since then, Tech has won 8 of 11 years.
