You can’t have a frenzy nowadays without it being part media frenzy, and local filmmaker Brian Wimer has CLAW in his sights. At the November 7 release party for Billy Hunt’s A CLAW to Remember, Wimer will also sell copies of CLAW: Women Getting a Grip, the first of two short films documenting the local lady arm wrestling scene, released by his own Amoeba Films. Wimer says that CLAW 2: Women Gone Wild—which he calls a “‘sister’ half-hour piece,” will be released in December. Each film is $19.95, and Wimer says that half of the total proceeds will benefit the Sexual Assault Resource Agency, a previous CLAW beneficiary.

“I love CLAW because it takes the piss out of gender stereotypes,” Wimer told C-VILLE via e-mail. “A woman can wrestle in a tutu or a burqa. She can be sexy, butch, glamorous, drunk or pregnant (or all of the above)…CLAW forces us to reevaluate our preconceptions of femininity and sportsmanship.”
Wimer, currently working on what he calls a “Buddhist thriller,” was kind enough to send C-VILLE this exclusive glimpse of CLAW: Women Getting a Grip.
