The last four films to screen at Carmike Cinema on Friday, April 20, all began at approximately 10pm. The longest of the bunch at 104 minutes, Disturbia—a blend of teen horror and Hitchcock’s voyeuristic Rear Window—most likely finished before midnight. At roughly 1am on Saturday morning, someone had their eyes trained on Carmike Cinema: The Daily Progress reported Sunday that one of the theater’s employees was robbed at gunpoint.

According to The Daily Progress, the employee had completed closing duties and was leaving the theater when the suspect—described as a white male in his 20s, estimated at a height of 6′ to 6’2" and a weight of 190 to 200 pounds, wearing jeans, a dark-colored sweater and a ski mask—brandished a gun and took an unspecified amount of cash before fleeing. Lieutenant John Teixeira of the Albemarle County Police Department confirmed the incident, adding that the robbery at Carmike is “the fourth or fifth one, total.”
Cinephiles may do best to avoid the late-night shows; previous robberies at Carmike were “definitely closing-time incidents,” says Teixeira.
Suspects in previous robberies also shared more than a night owl schedule. “The suspect [in previous cases] usually flees on foot,” says Teixeira. “There are a bunch of trails that lead to Mallside Court [east of the cinema] and the Woodbrook subdivision [north of the cinema].” All previous cases remain open; CrimeStoppers is accepting tips at 977-4000, the Albemarle County Police Department at 296-5807.—Brendan Fitzgerald
