Charlottesville City School Board approves rezoning

The Charlottesville City School Board has officially rezoned its elementary schools for the first time in more than 50 years. While the months-long process was the source of heated debate earlier this year, the new school zones were adopted unanimously at the May 1 board meeting.

Neighborhoods affected by the redistricting include the area west of Kindlewood, Kindlewood, Locust Grove north of U.S. 250, Rose Hill south of U.S. 250, the Meadows, and various parcels of land that have no CCS students.

The changes will be phased in over several years, beginning this August for the zones with no students. The first change affecting current CCS families will occur ahead of the 2027-28 school year, when the area west of Kindlewood will be rezoned from Summit to Sunrise Elementary, formerly Burnley-Moran.

Most of the new school zones go into effect in August 2029, at which point Kindlewood will also be rezoned from Summit to Sunrise Elementary. Remaining neighborhoods will also be redistricted at the same time, with students in the Locust Grove area shifting to Greenbrier Elementary, and both the Rose Hill area and the Meadows neighborhood students moving to Trailblazer Elementary.

Exemptions to the new zones will be available to families able to provide their own transportation, dependent on space.

More information, including a map of the adopted zones, implementation timelines, and guidelines for exemptions, is available at charlottesvilleschools.org/zoning.
