Casteen expresses confidence in UVA lacrosse coach Starsia, talks safety with Governor McDonnell

This afternoon, Governor Bob McDonnell held a lunch meeting with UVA President John Casteen at the governor’s mansion in Richmond to discuss university safety concerns and information disclosure in the wake of the slaying of fourth-year student Yeardley Love. Following the meeting, Casteen told reporters that George Huguely, the UVA lacrosse player charged with first-degree murder in Love’s death, might’ve been suspended or expelled for circumstances surrounding a 2008 arrest.

Following Huguely’s arrest last Monday, news surfaced that the 22-year-old student had reportedly threatened a Lexington police officer in 2008, when he was arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest. Casteen, who identified Huguely’s prior conviction as one of a "number of gaps" to be addressed by the university, also voiced his support for men’s lacrosse coach Dom Starsia, according to the Daily Progress.

"My own personal experience of the coach and his program does not bear out a great deal of the hearsay that floats around," said Casteen, according to the Post.

Sports teams at UVA will wear patches in memory of Love for the remainder of their seasons. And, according to VirginiaSports.com, tickets are still available for both men’s and women’s lacrosse games this weekend, as part of the NCAA tournament.
