C-VILLE Arts Beat: Top Picks for Apr 10-Apr 16

Saturday 4/14

Tea partiers

While on a road trip, Marie Borgman and Koda Kerl decided the time was ripe to start a band. They put some players together one spring night in Nelson County and took on the moniker Chamomile and Whiskey. The band swings sonically from poignant ballads to boot stompin’ raucous, just like the effects of, well, chamomile and whiskey. They’re celebrating their first release and sharing the stage with Mister Baby and Bobby St. Ours. Brown liquor optional. $10, 8 pm. The Southern Café & Music Hall, 103 S. First St. 977-5590.

Imbibe the subtle strength of Chamomile and Whiskey at the CD release party for The Barn Sessions on Saturday.

Sunday 4/15

Tallest comedienne standing

At 6’,2”, the former Miss North Carolina-turned comedienne, Jeanne Robertson, has always stood out in a crowd. She spent years dishing out clever speeches at conventions until satellite radio and YouTube yuks allowed her domestic humor and Southern drawl to reach a wider audience. Robertson translates real experiences into witty commentaries on life and how to approach it—stand tall. $34.50, 8pm. The Paramount Theater, 215 E. Main St., Downtown Mall. 979-1333.

Monday 4/16

Finding emo

Like many bands, Augustana has seen members come and go as they move up the ladder of success. Despite the turnover, front man Daniel Layus has held the band’s melodic sensibility in check. Its eponymously titled 2011 release delivers the same emotional swoon-pop that earned it over half a million gushing Facebook pals. $18 in advance, $20 day of show, doors at 7pm. The Jefferson Theater, 110 E. Main St., Downtown Mall. 800-594-TIXX.
