Newsplex unlikely to move by 2009

Charlottesville Newsplex, the TV station that operates CBS 19, ABC 16 and Fox 27, is pushing back the timeline for moving operations to 2307 Hydraulic Rd., but General Manager Brad Ramsey, who took the reins in July, says that the project is sill moving forward. “We’re considering all of our options, I guess is the […]

Building permits on pace for 18-year low

Albemarle County finally released its second quarter building report last week, and, as expected, numbers are way down. Only 266 building permits for new residential housing units were issued in the first six months of 2008, putting this year on pace for the lowest amount of new construction since the Weldon Cooper Center started keeping […]

Parking under a house? Way too radical

Developer Oliver Kuttner has been spending most of his time in Lynchburg lately. “I have 750,000 square feet in Lynchburg,” says Kuttner, talking on his cell phone while standing in one of his Lynchburg properties. “I’m down here every day.” The city Board of Architectural Review decided that this addition and carriage way for cars […]

MCP vote comes with symbolic opposition

In the end, the city approval of its portion of the Meadowcreek Parkway came down to a technicality, one so small that three of five city councilors couldn’t say no. On Monday, August 18, after a dozen speakers implored them not to, councilors David Brown, Satyendra Huja and Julian Taliaferro gave the tiny nudge necessary […]

Reservoirs, groundwater low, yet still no official drought

With the urban water supply at 73 percent of usable capacity, its lowest level since 2002, you would think Charlottesville would at least be under a drought watch, as it has been the previous two years. But the “state-of-the-art hydrologic computer modeling” of the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA) predicts only a 12 percent chance of drought.

TDR plan faces uphill battle

Stakeholder talks concerning transferable development rights (TDR) got truly underway last week, but the opening round of comments on county Supervisor David Slutzky’s “strawman” proposal didn’t augur much of a future. It will be hard to find consensus among the two dozen or so participants representing developers, realtors, businessmen, property owners, farmers, environmentalists, smart-growthers, slow-growthers […]

Perriello, Goode spar for first time

Where was the place to be at 1:30pm last Wednesday? It wasn’t some celebrity guest lecture at the Miller Center or a matinee performance at Live Arts or some restaurant’s grand opening. Nope. It was the Senior Center, where more than 400 flocked for a 90-minute “forum” between Fifth District congressional incumbent Virgil Goode and […]

Reservoir levels drop precipitously

“Chance of showers” is one of the most familiar refrains of late summer, echoing virtually every morning from TVs and radios. But the number of showers actually hitting our area—and, most importantly, filling our reservoirs—has been next to nothing in the past month, leaving our area vulnerable to a third consecutive year of drought restrictions. […]

Goodbye, Lars!
