Police have confirmed two armed robberies from the first week of October are related. The perpetrators attempted to abduct a 19-year-old male from Route 29 and assaulted a UVA student on the Corner—guns were used in both incidents.
On October 3, a teen was in his car at the 7-Eleven on the corner of Route 29 and Hydraulic Road. A man approached him and asked for a ride to the Barracks Road Shopping Center. When they arrived, the teen was robbed and threatened with handguns by two men, one of whom followed in a second car. The teen surrendered his wallet and fled.
The second incident happened October 6 on the Corner, near Elliewood Avenue. Two UVA students were walking through a parking lot in the early morning hours when they were confronted by an armed man. He demanded money and struck a 22-year-old student at least twice on the back of the head with the butt of his gun. The other student fled. The victim was treated at UVA Hospital, and claimed the handgun looked like a semi-automatic, according to Charlottesville Police Captain J.E. “Chip” Harding.
Charlottesville Police are looking for three men in their 20s—two are African-American, another is white with a neck tattoo—driving a dark-colored sedan with shiny, “tricked out” wheels. The car was initially reported to be a Honda, but now police are looking for a Toyota. Captain Harding says they’ve had many tips, but no solid leads in the case. “You have more vehicles that look like that than you realize in this area,” says Harding.
The suspects, if found, would be charged with armed robbery and felonious assault. They could also be charged for abduction for detaining the teen in the first incident.
